FISHERMAN SOKUJO SAKE

January 11th is the day of “Kagami-biraki”, on which the lid of a sake barrel is opened. The event is held in prayer for good health, well-being, and dreams fulfilled. It is a wonderful honor to introduce you to the Fisherman Sokujo sake with a limited-edition label, a special collaboration between sake masters, brush artist, and me.

It is a project that is very personal to me, yet communal in its nature.

Let me raise my glass to dreams fulfilled, blessings, and good health.

The Fisherman Sokujo sake is a flagship brand from the brewery Shiokawa, located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

The label has been designed by brush artist Yuki Takei.

A project that is utterly personal yet communal.

About the Brewery

Our brewery has been founded in the first year of the Taisho era. Uchinomachi, where our kuramoto is, is located to the west of Niigata City.

Since ancient times, the underground water of the Shinano River has been abundant, and it is a land blessed with good quality water. The rich history of the place can be felt all over.

The brewery is made of old-fashioned clay walls, and the temperature difference between the four seasons is small, making it an environment suitable for sake brewing. The 25 brewing tanks are equipped with an automatic cooling device to thoroughly control the temperature of the stored sake as well as the fermentation control of the mash.

About the Artist

Born in Niigata City, Yuki Takei graduated from Niigata Design College, and then traveled around the world during 10 months. He then moved to France, where he stayed one year. In Paris, he established a manga classroom and started giving lectures. After returning to Japan, where he started spraying urushi lacquer with an airbrush to create a manga work. He has held several urushi lacquer manga exhibitions since.

Where It All Started

When I first started my musical journey as the frontman and singer of the band Your Favorite Enemies, back in 2006, a very strong bond with Japan developed quickly. I was invited by some fans to visit Japan in 2007 (before we even played there), and I knew a love story had started. For the first time ever in my life, in this land so far away from me, I felt like I belonged somewhere.

When my journey as a solo artist began, although I was confused and unsure of everything, I had nonetheless the conviction of one thing: This album had to be launched in Japan first. I wanted the people from this country that had welcomed me like a brother, a son, a friend, to be the first to hear the music.  Therefore, on November 3 and 4, 2018, I held two very intimate listening sessions of my first album, Windows in the Sky, in an art gallery in Tokyo. The sessions were accompanied by a visual journey, Immersion Sky, which was also unreleased at that point in time.

To mark the occasion, my dear friend Kazuhiro, the master brewer behind the Fisherman Sokujo sake, decided to offer this sake to people who attended the event, so we could all raise a glass and mark this moment in a special way.
