The artist classifies “A Measure of Shape and Sounds” as experimental soundscape and ambient. The massive post-rock wall of sound attacks of his band The Long Shadows are nowhere to be seen here. The album was recorded by Alex Henry Foster in a particularly fragile phase of his life, when he was recovering from a difficult operation. It is basically a duo album that was recorded live (in the studio) by AHF together with his colleague Ben Lemelin from The Long Shadows.
We are probably hearing two ambient-style guitars here, which conjure up atmospheric and profound soundscapes with the help of reverb and loop technology. The mix creates the impression that it is playing the musical events behind a mysterious veil. In places I think I can recognize delicate guitar figures that unfold in a sparkling and repetitive manner. The moods range from relaxed to subtly threatening. Most of the time, however, lyrical moods dominate, which can seem like visions of a better world.
I see the album as a kind of self-therapy and self-discovery, whose healing and cleansing powers can be transferred to the listener, if one is not averse to this kind of minimalist ambient post-rock.
